The client had the goals of adding a fire pit with seating, and establishing a woodland garden while also keeping enough sun exposure for a grass lawn and a herb garden in the existing raised planting bed next to the deck. The plant selection includes a variety of narrower evergreen conifers that fit well into an urban yard, as well as several varieties of ferns, and a few grasses and grass-like plants where appropriate. The trees are placed so that they do not overly shade the herb garden and lawn. The varieties and placement of the plants should allow for changes in sun exposure as the trees grow. Runoff from the paved walkway in the east side yard collects in a strip of moisture-tolerant Juncus, Carex and Acorus.
